sometimes I Feel Like a nut (essays and observations)
by Jill Kargman
William Morrow/HarperCollins 2011
The ability to look at one’s life and laugh about the things we do, and why we do them, is precious and uplifting. Jill Kargman is such a person. In this charming, small collection of thoughts on the vagaries of life, she makes the reader smile with her ability to laugh at herself.
The tone of the vignettes is suggested by the dedication to Woody Allen, the “my hero and funniest human ever.”
We are treated to the recollections of things that were haunting in childhood, dealing with the physical and emotional issues of young womanhood, feeling like a gay man trapped in a woman’s body, having a vagina that is akin to the “Harlem Tunnel,” the ten most embarrassing moments of motherhood (so far), tattoos, botox, a tumor, feelings about religion, and life as it evolves for each of us.
Can you laugh at yourself? Or take your inner thoughts and verbalize them so others can take comfort in knowing that they are not alone with the weird thoughts that roll around in the head of each one of us.
sometimes I Feel Like a nut is a charming dose of humor and life. Put it by your bedside and read a parable a night. You will look forward to each one as you smile drifting off into remembrances of the things in your life that make you human, like all the rest of us.
Warms, Cym
