Read Everyday Live a Better Life with Taylor Swift

Posted on 5:00 AM by Unknown

Taylor Swift talks about how reading has inspired her song writing with Z100 radio personality Trey Morgan during Scholastic's "Read Every Day" literacy event at the company's NYC headquarters on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.

The event was webcast live into classrooms around the country and the world to encourage students to read every day in order to succeed in school and in life. Swift’s new album Red is out this week.

taylorswift-webcast1

Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift came by Scholastic headquarters Wednesday to share her love of books and reading with over 1.4 million viewers in a live webcast.

If you missed it, I recommend checking it out to hear Taylor’s thoughts on the books she’s loved, where she gets ideas for what to read next, how reading has influenced her writing and her career, and what kinds of stories inspire her.

This webcast is just one way Scholastic is spreading the message of their global literacy campaign, Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life. They encourage you to visit their website and join the campaign – it’s simple to do – and help a child read every day.

You can read more about the webcast at the On Our Minds blog. For pictures or a link to the video, you can go to our media room.

The Neighbors by Ania Ahlborn #book #review

Posted on 5:00 AM by Unknown

The Neighbors
by Ania Ahlborn
(2012 Thomas & Mercer)

Have you ever wondered what it would do to someone to have been sexually abused by a parent, whether a male or female victim? Or how that experience would play out in the victim’s later life? Would such an abused person have a need to avenge the abuse by doing the same thing to others?

And what if such a child’s mother had been brutally murdered, raped, and left by the roadside to die like discarded garbage? Would that further enflame the need for revenge? And if the child’s abuser was a minister of the gospel, revered by his flock?

In The Neighbors, a fine young man, Andrew, needs to escape the clutches of a mother who is alcoholic and cannot leave her own home! A childhood friend invites him to come across town to share his house.

Andrew finds neighbors who are the picture of perfection. The lady of the neighboring house, Harlow, is akin to Joan Clever. She makes cookies, lunches, and dinners for Andrew. Her home and grounds are the picture of perfection. Unable to find work, Andy accepts an offer of Harlow’s husband, Red, to work in their perfect yard, painting trim that needs no paint, and mowing grass that is already ideal.

If you enjoy thinking through the type of questions noted above, and then reading a talented writer’s exploration of how such a life might play out, you will enjoy this flowing story. Ania Ahlborn spins a clever tale, with an ending that will remind you of how lucky we are sometimes, even when we think we need to escape the clutches of our own nightmare. The grass on the other side of the hill may be green and pictureseque. It may also have an entirely different character and taste. Of course, one never knows until venturing across the fence to taste for oneself.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Neighbors and so will you. In the end, the answer to the questions noted above is that the unfortunate victim would be deeply damaged by abuse at the hands of the person who is supposed to nurture, protect, and love.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk #Book #Review

Posted on 4:00 AM by Unknown

Fight Club
by Chuck Palahniuk
(1996 W.W. Norton & Co.)

Have you ever wondered whether you have more than one personality? Does a different you emerge in your sleep, perhaps tormenting you for sleeping and inducing insomnia?

If there were another personality within you, how would you deal with your other self?

In reading Fight Club, which is a classic, I wondered about these questions. My own thought is that life with my other self would be surreal, as if I had an internal conflict that would make my thoughts seem strange to someone looking into me (or, perhaps, trying to deal with me).

This reflects my thought in reading this very interesting, and thought-provoking novel of many years ago. Tyler Durden lives such a life, including with Marla, the lover of his other self. In one life, Tyler has a job and works away. In the other, he becomes the guru of secret fighting clubs, in which two participants fight without protection until one quits. It is said to be a cleansing process.

The essence of the story is captured in this thought-provoking passage:

“You have a class of young strong men and women, and they want to give their lives to something. Advertising has these people chasing cars and clothes they don’t need. Generations have been working in jobs they hate, just so they can buy what they don’t really need.”

The story begins on top of a building about to be blown-up, with the Tylers standing and watching the destruction. The story itself is a few light years beyond any reality that you or I know, but that is probably reality for multiple-personality people.

In any event, I was circumspect when Fight Club was the assignment for our book club. I was intrigued and it produced a lively discussion. You will think about Tyler and compare him to your own life, or perhaps Tyler’s lover trying to deal with him.

This is an excellent read, certainly worthy of the acclaim it has attracted across the board.

Warms, Cym
