Best-selling author Vince Flynn dies at 47

An incredible author, mentor, father & husband. He died much too young with so much more to write.

from USA Today Bob Minzesheimer, USA TODAY

Novelist Vince Flynn, who was diagnosed with stage three metastatic prostate cancer in 2010, but continued to write his best-selling thrillers, has died at the age of 47.

Flynn died Wednesday morning at United Hospital in St. Paul.

He's best known for his CIA page-turners that starred Mitch Rapp, a counterterrorism operative who made Flynn the darling of conservatives. He wrote 14 USA TODAY best sellers.

Three reached No. 2 on the list: Kill Shot and The Last Man (both in 2012) and American Assassin in 2010.

His publisher, Atria, says it's not yet known what or how much was completed on Flynn's next novel, The Survivor, originally scheduled to be released in October.

In a 2012 interview with USA TODAY, Flynn discussed living and working with cancer: "The first 48 hours of my diagnosis were hellish," he said. "Things just seemed to get worse and worse. We (he and his wife) were sneaking around the house, whispering so the kids wouldn't hear us. It was horrible.

"But, he said then, " I feel great now. ... We have this under control."

He's survived by his wife, Lysa, and three children (a stepson, 16, and two daughters, 11 and 9).

His fans included George W. Bush, who called Flynn "a little too accurate" because Flynn's books are often so true to CIA actions around the world. Once, while catching a ride in Bush's limo from Andrews Air Force Base, Flynn was grilled by the then-president on where he gets his information.

"I started to stutter," Flynn said.

His 2004 Memorial Day describes a raid very similar to the one that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. Often his books have been put on security review by the Pentagon before they are released, and they are even used by the Secret Service to identify possible lapses in their security.

"It used to astound even me," he said of his "clairvoyance." All he did, he said, was "connect the dots. I just look at what's going on in the world."

Flynn was working in sales and commercial real estate 20 years ago when he began reading voraciously in an effort to conquer his childhood dyslexia. In the process he fell in love with espionage novels and decided to try writing one himself.

His first book, Term Limits, was self-published in 1997 after Flynn received 60 rejection letters. After its immediate success, an agent signed him.

Flynn said his novels are "entertainment, educational and serve as cautionary tales."

Heading the charge is rough-and-tumble CIA agent Rapp, who was introduced in Flynn's second novel, Transfer of Power.

Flynn was close friends with radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, whom he called "one of the smartest guys I've ever met."

Flynn said not all his fans are conservatives. But if the scales tip toward the right, it probably comes from the pro-military, CIA and law enforcement theme of the books," he said. "And the idea that the United States is not the problem."

My Father’s Ashes Are Home #happyfathersday

photo copy

I was born and spent much of my early life in Montana. My father died at 93. He and I were close throughout my life. His dying wish was to have his ashes spread in his favorite fishing stream near Whitehall, Montana.

My two brothers and I brought his ashes her to be spread on Father’s Day. He died 18 years ago. I have not been ready to spread them until now. My Dad’s parting words to me in every conversation were “I love you and am proud of you son.”

photo copy 2

With love and pride, we will wade out into this stream at this location to spread his ashes. It may be the hardest thing I have ever done, though I know his love and pride are engrained in my soul. I pray that I may be able to the same for my children and loved ones.

My father gave me the gift of himself, which I will cherish to convey to others as I release him in the waters of his life.

Happy Father's Day.

the boy who stole the leopard's spots by Tamar Myers #bookreview @WmMorrowBks‎

the boy who stole the leopard’s spots
by Tamar Myers
(Wm Morrow 2012)

What do you believe?  Is it information that you have accepted uncritically or what you have carefully thought through?  What is truth?  Must truth and information be the same thing?

Are you a heathen?  What is a heathen?  Are sophisticated European religious leaders the enlightened and local Africans the heathens?  Or the other way around?  Are Catholic priests representatives of the truth or native witch doctors?  Does it make any difference whether these questions are asked in 1935, 1958, or today?

In the boy who stole the leopard’s spots, Tamar Myers has written a brilliant story about identical twin boys born at a time when it was assumed by tribal witch doctors that one of the two must have been inhabited by evil spirits so should be murdered.  At the same time, their father, the chief, combined the killing of a huge leopard with the birth of his sons in a way to avoid the murder of an innocent child.

When the boys become adults, they are reunited, though needing to conceal their history our of respect for the same tribal shibboleths.

The collision of white, Belgian religious leaders in the Belgian Congo (prior to independence) with the supposed heathens, as well as interesting side-stories of jungle romance and fallen leaders, creates the dynamic of vivid fictional contrast.  The contrast of Christian belief with the resurrection of one of the boys is vivid.  What is real?

As I read this lovely story, I wondered how the illusions would be drawn to conclusion.  At the same time, I was reading C.S. Lewis’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, which has its own allegories (to be reviewed in due course).  I was also on board a ship in the Baltic Sea, so had plenty of time to think about the contrasts in the boy who stole the leopard’s spots.

The illusions play out.  In the end, I was delighted with a cleverly narrated story.  Yet, many of the contrasts remained unaddressed in my mind.  As usual, I jotted notes on a pad of paper as I read along, anticipating how the relationships and issues would be resolved.  Certain critical elements of the story were resolved, as others remained to the imagination.  I then found myself re-reading the beginning, end, and my notes to see if I missed something about the mysteries that remained.  Hopefully, there will be another story picking up where this one ended.

In any event, that hope is mute praise for a wonderful story.  I plan to use the boy who stole the leopard’s spots as my story in my next turn for our Philosophers Club (a male version of a book club).

Should You Self-Publish? 15 Questions

From Orna Ross on Jane Friedman's blog via The Passive Voice:

Self-publishing is not for every writer. In order to succeed, you need to have or develop specific traits, along with certain ways of approaching the publication of a book. Consider the following questions.

1. Are you positive and proactive?

Many writers wait for permission from an agent or publisher to say they are fit for publication—or for a PR campaign to explain why somebody should buy their book. The flip side of this passivity is chronic complaint syndrome: writers moaning about the vagaries of agents or publishers, about the death of bookstores, the dominance of Amazon, etc.
Not independent authors. You must take responsibility for the risks, as well as the rewards, of publishing your own work.

2. Are you brave?

Risk is the core activity of self-publishing. You must risk time on ideas, promotions, or concepts that may come to naught. You must risk money to pay for editorial and design upfront. You must also risk, in some circles, reputation. Family, friends, and many others may see self-publishing as a second-best option. Independent authors must put themselves out there twice over, once in the writing, again in the publishing.

Chip Kidd: Designing Books is no Laughing Matter. Ok, it is.

You know a Chip Kidd book when you see it -- precisely because it's unexpected, non-formulaic, and perfectly right for the text within.

As a graphic designer for Alfred A. Knopf since 1986, Kidd has designed shelves full of books, including classics you can picture in a snap:Jurassic Park, Naked by David Sedaris, All the Pretty Horses … His monograph, Chip Kidd: Book One, contains work spanning two decades.

As editor of comics for Pantheon, Kidd has commissioned work from graphic novelists like Chris Ware, Art Spiegelman, Dan Clowes and Ben Katchor. He's a novelist as well, author of The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners.

Enjoy!
